Art Nouveau and the Classical Tradition
Art Nouveau was a style for a new age, but it was also one that continued to look back to the past. This new study shows how in expressing many of their most essential concerns - sexuality, death and the nature of art - its artists drew heavily upon classical literature and the iconography of classical art. It challenges the conventional view that Art Nouveau's adherents turned their backs on Classicism in their quest for new forms. Across Europe and North America, artists continued to turn back to the ancient world, and in particular to Greece, for the vitality with which they sought to infuse their creations. The works of many well-known artists are considered through this prism, including those of Gustav Klimt, Aubrey Beardsley and Louis Comfort Tiffany. But, breaking new ground in its comparative approach, this study also considers some of the movement's less well-known painters, sculptors, jewellers and architects, including in central and eastern Europe, and their use of classical iconography to express new ideas of nationhood. Across the world, while Art Nouveau was a plural style drawing on multiple influences, the Classics remained a key artistic vocabulary for its artists, whether blended with Orientalist and other iconographies, or preserving the purity of classical form.

Fashion Installation: Body, Space, and Performance
Gone are the days when fashion relied on a runway launch with coinciding press promotions to show a couturier's new range. Today, design houses are thinking beyond traditional methods of display to stimulate interest in their collections, such as to the internet, fashion film and, more recently, fashion installations. This book offers a critical evaluation of the changing ways in which fashion has been exhibited, focusing specifically on the recent turn toward installation, whether in the form of static presentations, interactive performances or the more conventional curated designer exhibition. Connecting viewers - and consumers - on an immersive level, the fashion world has begun to appropriate installation methods traditionally associated with displays of experimental art, transcending the runway system and its constraints. This book turns to the designers who have pioneered fashion installations, such as Aitor Throup, Muccia Prada, Walter Van Beirendonck and Hussein Chalayan among others, and also looks back to the early influential fashion displays by designers such as Worth and Poiret to provide historical context. Divided into three parts, and covering a variety of installations from Vivienne Westwood's fashioned `concept' stores to Gareth Pugh's immersive films, this ground-breaking book positions the designer as the curator and exhibition-maker and offers the first focused study of the pertinent concept of fashion installation.

Intertwined Histories: Plants in Their Social Contexts
How do we understand the boundaries of individual creatures? What are the systems of interdependency that bind all living creatures together? Plants were among the the first to colonize the planet. They created the soil and the atmosphere that made life possible for animals. They are some of the largest and oldest life forms on Earth. In spite of their primacy, Western cultures have traditionally regarded plants as the lowest life forms, lacking mobility, sensation, and communication. But recent research argues that plants move and respond to their environment, communicate with each other, and form partnerships with other species. Art, poetry, and essays by cultural anthropologists, experimental plant biologists, philosophers, botanists and foresters expose the complex interactions of the vibrant living world around us and give us a lens through which we can explore our intertwined histories.

The Romare Bearden Reader
The Romare Bearden Reader brings together a collection of new essays and canonical writings by novelists, poets, historians, critics, and playwrights. The contributors, who include Toni Morrison, Ralph Ellison, August Wilson, Farah Jasmine Griffin, and Kobena Mercer, contextualize Bearden's life and career within the history of modern art, examine the influence of jazz and literature on his work, trace his impact on twentieth-century African American culture, and outline his art's political dimensions. Others focus on specific pieces, such as A Black Odyssey, or the ways in which Bearden used collage to understand African American identity. The Reader also includes Bearden's most important writings, which grant readers insight into his aesthetic values and practices and share his desire to tell what it means to be black in America. Put simply, The Romare Bearden Reader is an indispensable volume on one of the giants of twentieth-century American art. Contributors. Elizabeth Alexander, Romare Bearden, Mary Lee Corlett, Rachel DeLue, David C. On Modern Beauty - Three Paintings by Manet, Gauguin, and Cezanne
As the discipline of art history has moved away from connoisseurship, the notion of beauty has become increasingly problematic. Both culturally and personally subjective, the term is difficult to define and nearly universally avoided. In this insightful book, Richard R. Brettell, one of the leading authorities on Impressionism and French art of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, dares to confront the concept of modern beauty head-on. This is not a study of aesthetic philosophy, but rather a richly contextualised look at the ambitions of specific artists and artworks at a particular time and place. Brettell shapes his manifesto around three masterworks from the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum: Edouard Manet's 'Jeanne' (Spring), Paul Gauguin's 'Arii Matamoe' (The Royal End) and Paul Cezanne's 'Young Italian Woman at a Table'. The provocative and wide-ranging discussion reveals how each of these exceptional paintings, though depicting very different subjects-a fashionable actress, a severed head and a weary working woman-enacts a revolutionary, yet enduring, icon of beauty.

The exhibition, which includes paintings, prints, drawings, sculpture, architectural design, photography and models, is the largest open-submission show in the UK. First published in the 1870s, the Summer Exhibition Illustrated presents the highlights of each year's selection. The Royal Academicians on the Hanging Committee in 2019 include Stephen Chambers, Anne Desmet, Bob and Roberta Smith and Richard Wilson. Together they will decide which artists - professional and amateur alike - will have the chance to display and to sell their work in the galleries of Burlington House, to be seen by thousands of visitors. The painter Jock McFadyen RA will co-ordinate the Summer Exhibition this year. In the Mind, But Not From There: Real Abstraction and Contemporary Art considers how the Marxian concept of Real Abstraction--originally developed by Alfred Sohn Rethel, and recently updated by Alberto Toscano--might help to define the economic, social, political, and cultural complexities of our contemporary moment. In doing so, this volume brings together noted contemporary artists, literary critics, curators, historians, and social theorists who connect the concept of Real Abstraction with contemporary cultural production. Theoretical and artistic contributions from Benjamin Noys, Paul Chan, Joao Enxuto and Erica Love, Marina Vishmidt, Sven Lutticken, and many others help to map out the relationship between political economy and artistic production in the realm of contemporary, globalized cultural exchange. This anthology places economic and social analyses alongside creative projects and visual essays to consider the many angles of contemporary art, and how inquiry into the the production of abstraction through material and social processes can be used to better understand, and hopefully change, the conditions under which art is made, seen, and circulated today. Published in collaboration with [NAME] publications.

Koho Mori-Newton: No Intention
The Japanese artist Koho Mori-Newton is a master when it comes to handling silk, which he places in an exciting dialogue with architecture. In this way he creates cult-like spaces which interact with light in a fasci nating way. In addition to the works in silk, this volume also shows various graphic work groups from the last 35 years as well as the Path of Silk, created especially for no intention. Koho Mori-Newton (*1951) is a master of intentional lack of intention. His works appear simple, but the aesthetic which lies behind them is complex. Time and again he investigates the basis of art itself, questions the concept of the originality of the artistic creative process and explores the boundaries of artworks. His oeuvre lures us into a world that exists beyond the obvious. Path of Silk, a labyrinthine installation of room-high panels of silk, worked in China ink by Mori-Newton, presents a fragile interplay of space and light, of heaviness and lightness. Further areas of focus in his creative work are repetition and copy, from which his graphic works derive their own special charm.

Nitsch: Spaces of Colour
Hermann Nitsch produced his first poured paintings around 1960. In this form of action painting, the artist is primarily concerned with the substance of the paint, which he investigates from one Painting Action to the next. This catalog illustrates the development of his painterly works from the early 1960s to the present day. The main focus of the content lies in the characteristics of the various work cycles. In addition to the first splatter paintings it shows floor splatter paintings from the Red Cycle (1995), works from the Six-Day Play (1989) or the yellow Resurrection Cycle (2002). While one colour dominates in the monochrome works, in others a real explosion of colours takes place. The paint is splattered or sprayed; it may be applied in liquid form or impasto. The artist may use a paintbrush or smear the paint with his hands. The focal point is the exploration of the state of the paint, which varies between liquid and solid.

Abstract Expressionism
In 1946 the art critic Robert Coates, writing in the New Yorker, first used the term 'Abstract Expressionism'. The two words combine the emotional intensity of the German Expressionists with the anti-figurative aesthetic of the European Abstract schools. Although they were being painted by then little-known artists working in low-rent studio space, works of Abstract Expressionist art now dominate the walls of major museums. This important publication re-evaluates the movement, recognising its complex and fluid reality, and branching further into multimedia. As such, this book encompasses sculptors such as David Smith and photographers such as Aaron Siskind as well as some of the most famous painters of the twentieth century, including Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, Franz Kline, Arshile Gorky and Clyfford Still.

Boom: The Megadealers Behind the Irresistible Rise of the Contemporary Art Market
Before Damien Hirst stuffed a shark, before Basquiat picked up a spray can, before Andy Warhol started The Factory, a pile of unwanted Jackson Pollocks changed everything. From them emerged the first major modern art dealer. It was 1947, and the art world would never be the same. From the early days on 57th Street, to the rise of SoHo in the 60s, to the emergence of Chelsea as the hotbed of art galleries, we see the meteoric rise and the devastating falls of the most renowned dealers: Larry Gagosian, David Zwirner, Arne Glimcher, and Iwan Wirth. With unparalleled access, the longtime Vanity Fairreporter tells us the story of contemporary art through the people who coddled, supported, and funded the likes of Jeff Koons, and Cy Twombly. It's a story of backstabbing, betrayals, fruitful partnerships, genius, and ever larger sums of money. The world of contemporary art is inextricable from the wild wealth and naked financial opportunism that surrounds it.

Frank Gehry - Hans Scharoun: Strong Resonances
Frank Gehry and Hans Scharoun never met each other - and yet two of their most famous buildings are closely linked: Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles (2003) and the Berlin Philharmonie by Scharoun (1963). Taking these buildings as the starting point, the exhibition and catalogue examine the relationship between the two architects. Scharoun's Expressionist approach provided the inspiration for Gehry's Deconstructivist formal language in Los Angeles. The exhibition and book focus on Scharoun's influence on Gehry - not only the buildings that were actually realized, but also his visionary architectural fantasies - and Gehry's continuing activities in and with Berlin, such as his contribution to the competition for the Museum Island (1994-97), the DZ Bank at Pariser Platz (1994-98) and the Pierre Boulez Hall in the Barenboim-Said Academy (2014-17). The catalogue assembles essays, interviews and contemporary documents in order to introduce this fascinating topic.

Emma Stibbon: Fire and Ice
Emma Stibbon's drawings and prints depict volcanoes, tectonic plates and powerful glaciers. Includes commentary by the artist on the making and location of each image. The artist is fascinated by environments in flux. Her work often explores the impact of natural forces: the shifting tectonic plates, volcanic activity and powerful glaciers that shape and transform the Earth's surface. Stibbon has accompanied research expeditions in the Arctic and Antarctic Oceans, lived and worked among volcanoes in Hawai'i, and has made several visits to Stromboli, off the coast of northern Sicily, Iceland and Norway. This book presents the sketches she made during her travels. They have the immediacy that results from an artist working at speed and often in difficult circumstances. Readers will discover the unexpected visual effect of ink that has frozen on contact with the paper. The book is introduced by the artist who, informed by her discussions with vulcanologists and glaciologists, explains why she is drawn to depict nature's extremes.

This fascinating 1873 publication is a version of the catalogue produced by the Wedgwood company almost one hundred years earlier, in 1787. Its editor, the feminist writer Eliza Meteyard (1816-79), was a friend of the Wedgwood/Darwin families, and had published a two-volume biography of Josiah Wedgwood in 1865. She explains in her preface that the sixth (and last) such catalogue of Wedgwood's lifetime, 'having been long out of print ... is thus verbally reprinted, without other alteration than a few press corrections and the insertion of various illustrations from the Life of Wedgwood'. A brief history of the catalogues is provided, followed by a long list of the cameos, intaglios, figurines, vases and dinner, tea and coffee services which the firm offered. Wedgwood also advised on how to form a collection of cameos, which are listed by subject: sets containing Greek gods, or kings of France, or popes were available.

The Moving Eye: Film, Television, Architecture, Visual Art and the Modern
Once the province of film and media scholars, today the moving image is of broad concern to historians of art and architecture and designers of everything from websites to cities. As museums and galleries devote increasing space to video installations which no longer presuppose a fixed viewer, urban space becomes envisioned and planned through fly throughs, and technologies such as GPS add data to the experience of travel, moving images have captured the attention of geographers and scholars across the humanities and social sciences. Their practice of mobility studies is remaking how we understand a contemporary world in relentless motion. Media theorist and historian Anne Friedberg (1952-2009) was among the first practitioners of visual studies to theorize the experience of vision in motion. Her books have become key points of reference in the discussion of the windows that frame images and the viewers in motion who perceive them. Although widely influential beyond her own discipline, Friedberg's work has never been the subject of an extended study. The Moving Eye: Film, Television, Architecture, Visual Art and the Modern gathers together essays by renowned thinkers in media studies, art history, architecture, and museum studies to consider the rich implications of her work for understanding film and video, new media, visual art, architecture, exhibition design, urban space, and virtual reality. Ranging from early cinema, to works by Le Corbusier, Sergei Eisenstein, Gordon Matta-Clark, and Pierre Huyghe, to theories of the image in motion informed by psychoanalysis, theories of the public sphere, and animal studies, each of the nine essays in the book advances the lines of inquiry commenced by Friedberg.

Inspired by Cuba: A Survey of Cuba-themed Ceramics
From fine china to tobacco jars to baseball memorabilia, this amazing collection represents a wide range of Cuban-themed ceramics. Inspired by Cuba explores the many ways in which the island of Cuba has been immortalized in ceramics. The pieces range from the mid-18th century to recent years. These objects represent many years of collecting and fall into two classifications. First, those pieces illustrated with images and symbols of the island or its people, or with references to named places, official institutions or commercial establishments inside, and even outside, the island. Next, those items which use the name of Cuba (and variations thereof) or Havana, as a catchy, attractive brand that appeals to consumers' fascination and desire for all things Cuban.

Street Art: An Illustrated Anthology
What is behind the tidal wave of street art that is sweeping through the cultural scene today? What are its artistic features, its codes, and its language? How has its production, which was originally exclusively centered in the urban space, invaded galleries, bringing with it real popularity for some artists? These are some of the questions that Magda Danysz, a gallery owner and recognized expert on street art, answers with an easily comprehensible and entertaining style in this unique, richly illustrated anthology, interspersed with the portraits of the big international names. This volume retraces the history of the genre from its beginnings in the mid-1970s to the current issues that surround it today. This historical journey is dotted with portraits of the big international names from the field and dives deep into one of the major currents of contemporary art.
