This story takes place in the Deep South of America in the early nineteenth century. Rawl Rawlinson, a reclusive fur trapper, is a mystery to the townsfolk of Waterlooville, Florida. He lives in a ramshackle hut among the Negroes on the mudflats and he has a unique relationship with the warlike Indians who live in the Everglades. A ruthless killer named Deacon learns that Rawl is hiding a fortune in diamonds and pearls, and Rawl the hunter becomes the hunted.
