This is an updated edition of Abrams' history of Long Island, published in 1983. A chapter on the post-war period has been added. The work begins with a description of the geological formation of the island, and takes the story up to the present day. The narrative covers Native Americans, Dutch and English settlers, the American Revolution, the Roaring Twenties, and the growth of suburbs and resorts since World War II. The cast includes farmers, whalers, builders, artists and scientists, plus figures including Nathan Hale, Walt Whitman, John Jacob Astor, Irving Berlin, Jackson Pollock, Billy Joel and Jerry Seinfeld.
