A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
Based - very loosely - on the plays of Plautus, A Funny Thing...ran for three years on Broadway with Zero Mostel as the cowardly slave, Pseudolus. The first British production, with Frankie Howerd, ran almost as long and spawned the TV series Up Pompeii! A Funny Thing...was only Sondheim's third musical and the first for which he wrote the score as well as the lyrics. On the first two, West Side Story and Gypsy, he had written lyrics only. It opened on Broadway in May 1962 and ran for 964 performances.

Company: The Complete Revised Book and Lyrics
It's Bobbie's thirty-fifth birthday party, and all her friends are wondering why she isn't married. Why can't she find the right man, settle down and start a family? A breakthrough on Broadway in 1970, Company is Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's legendary musical comedy about life, love and loneliness, featuring some of Sondheim's most iconic songs including `Company', `You Could Drive a Person Crazy', `The Ladies Who Lunch', `Side by Side' and `Being Alive'. The acclaimed West End revival in 2018 was conceived and directed by award-winning director Marianne Elliott and produced by Elliott & Harper Productions. Reimagining the musical by switching the gender of several characters, including the protagonist Bobbie, played by Rosalie Craig, the production also starred Patti LuPone, Mel Giedroyc and Jonathan Bailey. This edition features the complete revised book and lyrics for the production, colour production photographs, and an introduction by Sondheim's biographer David Benedict.

Finishing the Hat
The winner of seven Tonys, seven Grammys, an Oscar, and a Pulitzer Prize, Stephen Sondheim has become synonymous with the best in musical theatre. Now, in Finishing the Hat, he has not only collected his song lyrics for the first time, he's giving readers a rare, personal look into his extraordinary shows and life. Along with the lyrics, both published and unpublished, for all of his productions from 1954 to 1981 - including West Side Story, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, and Sweeney Todd, which have starred some of the most famous and talented actors in the world from Johnny Depp and Catherine Zeta Jones, to Judi Dench and Alan Rickman, Finishing the Hat is a celebration of the act of creation. Sondheim discusses his relationship with his mentor, Oscar Hammerstein II, and his collaborations with legends Leonard Bernstein, Richard Rodgers, Angela Lansbury, and countless others. His anecdotes - rich with history, personal insights, and intimate details - transport us back to a time when theatre was a major pillar of American culture. And throughout the book, Sondheim analyses his work and dissects his own songs as well as those of others, offering unparalleled insight into songwriting that will be studied for years to come. Brilliant, poignant, scathing, and funny, Finishing the Hat is the newest production Sondheim can add to his list of classic works.

Sunday in the Park with George
Re-issued alongside rare revival of Sondheim's famous musical about the French Impressionist, Georges Seurat, starring Olivier Award-winning Daniel Evans. First staged on Broadway in 1984 and at the National Theatre in London in 1990, Sunday in the Park with George is an extraordinary creation even for Sondheim. Inspired by Seurat's pointillist masterpiece, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (which is reproduced in the book), the musical brings both Seurat and the painting to life on stage. In the second half, over a century later, Seurat's great-grandson is wrestling with the same obsession: that art comes before love, before everything. This volume contains the complete book and lyrics as well as a 50-page introduction detailing the making of the musical plus an interview with Sondheim plus The New York Times review in which Frank Rich called it: audacious, haunting and...touching...The first truly modernist work of musical theatre that Broadway has ever produced . Sunday in the Park with George is re-issued alongside the first major revival since the premiere, starring Daniel Evans, who won an Oliver Award for another Sondheim: Merrily We Roll Along .
