Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division
Joy Division changed the face of music. The sound of music. The meaning of music. Godfathers of the current alternative scene, they reinvented rock in the post-punk era, creating a new sound -- dark, hypnotic, intense - that would influence U2, Morrissey, R.E.M., Radiohead and many others. The band's image, once subversive and alienating, has become an internationally renowned 'look' well documented by photographers Anton Corbijn, Kevin Cummins and graphic designer Peter Saville. Inspired by the attitude, energy and sound of Punk, particularly the Sex Pistols, Peter Hook and his old school friend Bernard Sumner started a band which continues to influence popular music 35 years later, uniting with a gifted lead-singer and lyricist, Ian Curtis, and a brilliant drummer, Stephen Morris. With some cobbled together instruments and a clapped out old van, four young lads from Manchester and Salford shared the same vision and created their own unique sound in pubs and clubs first across the north-west, then across the whole of Britain, until in 1980 they had released two albums and were on the cusp of touring America. Then Ian Curtis committed suicide leaving everyone around him bereft. Best known for the propulsive bass guitar melodies of 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' Hooky was at the heart of the sound that came to define an era and inspire a generation. In the frank, no-holds-barred style that has seen his previous book The Hacienda: How Not to Run a Clubhailed as one of the best music books of 2009, Peter 'Hooky' Hook gives us the inside story of life with Joy Division. He talks with eye-opening candour and reflection about the suicide of Ian Curtis: often seen as the intellectual one , to Peter and the band he was just one of the lads and the burden of balancing his epilepsy and the demands of his domestic life only really emerged when it was too late. He covers the band's friendships and fall-outs; their rehearsals and recording sessions; and the larger-than-life characters who formed a vital part of the Joy Division legend: Tony Wilson, Rob Gretton, Martin Hannett, and more.

`This book will delight both New Order-ites and general rock readers' MojoA ROLLICKING, NO-HOLDS-BARRED ACCOUNT OF NEW ORDER'S ENTIRE HISTORY. Two acclaimed albums and an upcoming US tour - Joy Division had the world at their feet. Then, on the eve of that tour, the band's troubled lead singer, Ian Curtis, killed himself. The next time they got together, they were a new band. That band was New Order - their label was Factory Records, their club The Hacienda. Their distinctive sound paved the way for the dance music explosion that followed, earning them the reputation as one of the most influential bands of their generation, and changing the course of popular music. Following on from his bestselling titles The Hacienda and Unknown Pleasures, Peter Hook has written a rollicking, no-holds-barred account of the band's entire history. Substance is packed with never-before-seen detail, discographies and technical information. This is possibly the most entertaining memoir ever written by a British musician. `There are stories here that make Ozzy Osbourne looks like Mother Teresa' Sunday Express `A rollicking read' Record Collector `Rock writing rarely tells us properly what a band treading water or in slow decline feels like from the inside. Hook does so memorably' Guardian `As mammoth and downright idiotic as the band deserves ... something hilariously daft happens on nearly all of Substance's 750 pages' Classic Pop

Two acclaimed albums and an upcoming US tour - Joy Division had the world at their feet. Then, on the eve of that tour and the beginning of what would surely have been an international success story, the band's troubled lead singer, Ian Curtis, killed himself. 'We didn't really think about it afterwards. It just sort of happened. One day we were Joy Division, then our lead singer killed himself and the next time we got together, we were a new band...'Peter Hook That band was New Order.Their distinctive sound - a fusion of post-punk and ground-breaking electronica - paved the way for the dance music explosion of the '80s and earned them the reputation as one of the most influential bands of their generation. Despite their success, the band has always been a collision the visionary and the volatile, and relationships have often been fraught with tensions. Peter Hook has written a no-holds-barred, comprehensive account of the band's entire history, packed with outrageous anecdotes and including every set list and tour itinerary and interspersed with 'geek facts' of every piece of electronic equipment used to forge the sound that changed the direction of popular music.

The Coaching and Reflecting Pocketbook
Coaching skills are, fundamentally, about the quality of dialogues that happen at all levels of an organisation. Where coaching and 'reflective practice' are part of a school's ethos, performance improves and attainment is raised. The Coaching and Reflecting Pocketbook comprises a collection of highly practical skills and strategies that can be used by all educational professionals, regardless of role or status. Aimed at teachers in primary and secondary schools in the UK, this extensively illustrated book is equally relevant to those working overseas. Whether it's a headteacher providing support to a fellow head, or a learning mentor providing intensive support to a student, the tips tools and techniques apply. The book opens with a consideration of coaching as a concept, what makes a good coach and practical considerations such as time, confidentiality, record-keeping etc. A section on basic coaching principles includes rapport-building, active listening and the key stages of a coaching conversation, leading to the development of 'conscious competence'. Sections on goals and journeys identify the importance of clear targets and committing to change. Coaching with parents and students is also covered, focusing on such areas as 'coping skills' and empowerment. A final chapter deals with coaching pairs and groups, highlighting how reflective practice can facilitate the development of a true learning organisation. The Coaching and Reflecting Pocketbook is part of the Teachers' Pocketbooks Series , an imprint of Management Pocketbooks Ltd and winners of the 2005 Education Resources Awards. The concise, practical guides are written by experienced teachers and packed with information, advice, ideas and strategies for primary and secondary teachers.

Behaviour Management Pocketbook
How to manage their classes is not only every new teachers' first concern, it's an area about which even the most experienced teachers are never complacent. This new edition of the Teachers' Pocketbooks' top-selling title is a practical, authoritative guide to creating calm classes and focused, co-operative students. The book starts from the premise that teachers cannot control the behaviour of children; instead they must seek to influence it. Teachers are most effective in managing behaviour when they focus on antecedents and consequences. This means building relationships and using preventative strategies followed by consistent use of logical consequences. The book covers different styles of behaviour management; getting the basics right; eight core principles and a ten-step discipline plan. A section entitled 'developing the toolkit' offers a broad range of strategies for teachers to use. All are explained in practical, classroom terms with examples of phrases to use for maximum effectiveness. Underpinning the repertoire of techniques is a strong framework: the 4Rs - rights, responsibilities, rules and routines. Liberal use of cartoons, diagrams, mnemonics and other visual devices reinforce the message and fast-track understanding. Authors Peter Hook and Andy Vass are nationally renowned experts in the field of behaviour management. They have acted as consultants to the government as well as to numerous schools and LAs. They are regarded as inspirational trainers, and with more than 60 years' combined teaching experience, their ideas are firmly grounded in classroom experience.

Peter Hook, as co-founder of Joy Division and New Order, has been shaping the course of popular music for thirty years. He provided the propulsive bass guitar melodies of 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' and the bestselling 12-inch single ever, 'Blue Monday' among many other songs. As co-owner of Manchester's Hacienda club, Hook propelled the rise of acid house in the late 1980s, then suffered through its violent fall in the 1990s as gangs, drugs, greed and a hostile police force destroyed everything he and his friends had created. This is his memory of that era and 'it's far sadder, funnier, scarier and stranger' than anyone has imagined. As young and naive musicians, the members of New Order were thrilled when their record label Factory opened a club. Yet as their career escalated, they toured the world and had top ten hits, their royalties were being ploughed into the Hacienda and they were only being paid GBP20 per week. Peter Hook looked back at that exciting and hilarious time to write HACIENDA. All the main characters appear - Tony Wilson, Barney, Shaun Ryder - and Hook tells it like it was - a rollercoaster of success, money, confusion and true faith.
