Handbook of Laboratory Health and Safety
This new edition of the critically acclaimed Handbook of Laboratory Health and Safety was designed to help safety officers, laboratory managers, principal investigators, and laboratory workers bring lab health and safety into the twenty-first century. It does this by presenting a timely, complete, and easy-to-implement approach to ensuring a workplace that is safe for its workers as well as the surrounding community. Further, the handbook lays out guidelines to help laboratories comply with the requirements set by OSHA, the EPA, FDA, DOT, DEA, and other relevant regulatory agencies. While the overall philosophy that made the first edition so successful has remained the same, the book has been extensively revised and updated to reflect all new regulations and technical advances that have occurred in the field over the past five years. In addition, this Second Edition now features a multitude of sample forms, checklists, protocols, and other valuable documents that will become an indispensable part of any laboratory health and safety management program. A valuable reference tool for those seeking detailed information and guidance on specific safety and health issues, Handbook of Laboratory Health and Safety, Second Edition is also much more. By providing a set of clear, easy-to-follow guidelines that serve as a rational framework for creating site-specific health and safety requirements, it, in effect, arms laboratory managers with a solid foundation upon which to build--or reengineer--a comprehensive program for identifying, managing, and controlling health and safety hazards in the laboratory. All of the authors' recommended guidelines are clearly presented in the section entitled Suggested Laboratory Health and Safety Guidelines. Each chapter of the handbook refers to the relevant sections of the Suggested Guidelines, explains the basis for the recommendations, and provides guidance on how to comply. Offering a feasible, easily implemented approach to designing and maintaining a safe workplace, Handbook of Laboratory Health and Safety is an indispensable tool for all those responsible for safeguarding the health and safety of lab workers and the residents of the ambient community. R. Scott Stricoff...and Douglas B. Walters...have assembled information from a variety of sources that is not easily available elsewhere. ..This is a useful book. -- Chemical & Engineering News ...provides a useful contribution and will be a welcome addition to the laboratory safety adviser's library...the authors' breadth of knowledge and expertise gives a genuine sense of authority to the information given. -- Chemistry and Industry ...useful for laboratory managers and safety officers who are in charge of the safety of workplaces, but it is also useful for laboratory architects and designers, supervisors, and others in charge of planning safe laboratories. Employees will also find information on the handling of toxic samples and chemicals...Although the book follows American standards and regulations, its interest may be considered worldwide. The book is especially useful in practical safety work because it explains thoroughly how to build a safe and pleasant laboratory and how to maintain its safety. -- Scandinavian Journal of Work Environment and Health

The National Toxicology Program Chemical Data Compendium: 8 vol set
This Compendium provides a vast amount of information about potentially toxic chemicals to regulatory and research agencies, consultants, academics, and libraries. The National Toxicology Program's Chemical Data Compendium consists of eight volumes containing 50 fields that present detailed information on 2,270 different chemicals. The data is obtained from the literature or experimentally determined. Each compound is listed in every volume even when there is no information available for it in some volumes. Information in the NTP Compendium was gathered and updated as compounds were used throughout a 12 year period from 1979 to 1991. Throughout the eight volumes, the primary chemical name and the Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number (CAS No.) remain constant and all 2,270 chemicals are listed alphabetically in each volume. Use the eight volumes together to get the full benefit of the NTP Chemical Data Compendium, or select only those volumes that contain the information you need and use them as stand-alone references.

First Response: A Laboratory Health and Safety Chemical Expert System
First aid decisions made before professional medical help arrives in an emergency situation can be critical to the well-being of a victim. First Response is the resource to turn to when you need advice for emergency first aid response in the first few minutes after exposure to laboratory amounts of hazardous chemicals. This interactive program considers pertinent chemical and physical properties based on your responses to a few simple questions. It presents advice for exposure by inhalation, ingestion, and eye or skin contact. It also offers guidance on which types of respirators should be worn when working with a wide variety of chemicals. First Response was developed for the National Toxicology Program by occupational medical doctors, chemists, toxicologists, and industrial hygienists. It was used as the source of information for the National Toxicology Program's Chemical Database, Volume 5, and with its resident knowledge base, it can be used with any other databases or lists of chemicals to provide the same rapid, effective advice. Pull down help windows and automatic printing of advice reports make First Response quick and easy to use. The program also features automatic installation and is completely menu-driven. First Response is perfect for industrial hygienists, safety professionals, poison center personnel, industrial nurses, high school nurses, and university student treatment centers. Software requirements First Response will operate on IBM or IBM-compatible hardware with 640K RAM, a hard drive with a minimum of .5 MB of available disk space, and DOS 2.1 or higher.

National Toxicology Program's Chemical Solubility Database
This database is a compilation of experimentally-determined solubility ranges of over 1,700 compounds in the National Toxicology Program's Chemical Repository. Each compound's solubility was determined in a consistent manner in one to six solvents. Solvents chosen were those most commonly used for toxicology studies, spill cleanups, and chemical synthesis or chemical reaction experiments. These solvents include acetone, 95% ethanol, water, dimethyl sulfoxide, methanol, and toluene. Data for many of the research and industrial chemicals featured in this database does not exist anywhere else. The database is also remarkably simple to use and offers many features that make finding information quick and easy. Compounds can be located by using partial names such as acids, amines, ketones, cyanides, and ethers. You can also locate compounds by using their CAS Number or by entering the specific chemical name. The program is entirely menu-driven and can perform Boolean and/or type searches. It comes equipped with one 3-1/2 diskette and one 5-1/4 diskette, a 20-page manual, and can run on IBM or IBM compatible hardware. Dos 2.0 or higher, 640K of internal memory, and 1mb of hard drive memory are required. National Toxicology Program's Chemical Solubility Database is a must have program for toxicologists, safety professionals and industrial hygienists, and chemists.
